Lot Description: Meat Birds - Pen of 2 - Red Ribbon
Exhibitor: Rian de Wit
Tag: 20
Breed: Cornish Cross
Ribbon: Red
Biography: My name is Rian de Wit. I have been in 4-H for 6 years and won Master Poultry Showman, Goat, Rabbit, Hobbies (Train layouts), and Horsemanship. As well as Novice Horseman of the Year, Chicken, Rabbit, Hobbies, Technology and Engineering, Cooking pins. This project is raising meat birds (Cornish cross breed) for eight weeks. I then show them at the Hemlock Fair. I participate in a special showmanship. We are asked about our knowledge on raising market animals for good quality meat. I sell them at the 4-H auction. After the fair, I have to calculate the average daily gain per animal, total raising cost and if I made a profit or loss per animal. This project helps me and other 4-H participants learn how to present ourselves and business skills. However, my favorite part of the project is receiving my auction check from selling my birds. This year I will be starting to save money for college. I want to go to RIT and be an engineer. I am also trying something new in feeding the birds organic food. I hope that this will improve the quality of the meat.

*A 12-14 pound meat bird will yield approximately 8-11 lbs of meat

Winning bidders will be called to discuss payment and processing options the day after the auction.

For more information, call Mark at 585-991-5420 or email mjw16@cornell.edu

Each animal is at it's respective farms and will be transported to the meat processor at the buyer's expense.
